English 365-02’ers:

A few comments about my comments:

“!” means “Good! Excellent! Great! Yes!  I agree! That’s a great idea! I didn’t think of that!” If you see “!!” or “!!!!” I agree with you that much more enthusiastically. Usually these are located by a carat sign (<, >) or a parenthesis ( ) which notes the area to which I am agreeing.

Check marks in the margins note quotes. Quotes should be formatted as we discussed in class (act.scene.line):

Touchstone says “Well, praised be the gods for thy foulness! Sluttishness may come hereafter. But be it as it may be, I will marry thee” (3.3.38-40).

You should be using quotes for support.  You’ll need to quote in larger papers; responses are getting you ready for that.  Quotes are the difference between a Pass and a Pass+.

MLA format = name info in the upper left corner includes the following in this order: your name, instructor’s name, class, date.

Underlined items are just me identifying your key points or points from the prompt.

“?” denote a point of confusion – something doesn’t quite make sense to me as reader.  R.O = Run-on (a too-long sentence); Wdg. = wording issue.  Usually you can read these statements aloud to catch the error.

Questions in the margins and at the end are a good thing. It means you’ve piqued my interest and I am engaging you in dialogue … on paper … as best I can.  Dialogue of course occurs best in a face-to-face situation and I would love to discuss your ideas at any time.  It’s more productive than comments at the end anyway.

I use emoticons to indicate my personal response to a phrase or idea.  Ask me for clarification if they don’t make sense.

Check mark @ top = Pass.

Random note: I changed my office hours. They are now: M&F 8-9 am & 10-11:30 am.
